Hiking the Iron Mountain Trail 7 miles

July 22nd

Well so much for taking it easy, there is a break in the weather and it is a beautiful day so we are going hiking.  Harnessing up 2 of the hyper dogs Cosmo and Pookie and we are hitting a 7 mile hike. We drive down to the start of the trail and we are off.

Cosmo is crazy as ever and he is running and biting his leash like he is trying to walk himself. Todd is leading and I am pulling up the rear with Pookie. The first half mile is straight up the mountain so once we reached the top we stopped and got some water for the dogs and us.

We are seeing a lot of deer tracks, about 3 miles into our journey we are on the Iron Mountain Trail and we are talking about bears and that they do not really like eating people. As we are talking about Black Bears, I say " i do not want to see any signs of bears" the next thing you know Todd says "well here is something for you, bear scat" it is recent but it is not like within the last hour but it was from today. So I start to freak out a little bit but Todd reassures me that everything will be fine.

Were about 5 miles into the hike and we start to hear thunder from the other side of the mountain so we start to walk a little faster in hopes that we will not get caught in the rain.  About 10 minutes later the rain starts to come down in a sprinkle we have about 2 miles left in the hike and a mile until we get to the straight branch shelter where we can wait for the rain to pass, then one more mile down the mountain. As soon as we get to the sign for the shelter the rain starts to really come down, we run to the shelter and get in and take the dogs off the leashes.

While we are waiting for the rain to slow I pull out the water and granola and get comfy, we knew we would be there for about an hour. We are looking around the shelter for something to make a rain coat with we see clean trash bags hanging from the wall.  We make rain coats throw Cosmo in the backpack (little legs and he is white so we thought carrying him would be best) take Pookie off the leash and we head down our last mile in the rain as fast as we safely could. Pookie is in such a hurry that she is so far ahead of us she acts like she knows where she is going.

We finally see the road and we get back to the house wipe the puppies down and sit and rest and realize that our truck is at the other end of the trail so we waited for a ride from one of our fellow host Melissa and Mike's Son Ian.  Overall it was a fun filled day of hiking and we are looking forward to hiking a small portion of the Appalachian Trail next.!!
