August 5th 2014 Virginia Creeper Trail

We for the first time in a while we wake up to a beautiful day and this is one of our off days, so no work!!!  We decide we want to ride down the Creeper Trail. The Creeper Trail is an old like 1800’s railroad through the mountains that was closed in the late 1970’s.  They took the tracks off and made a very nice inclined trail down through the mountains for bikers, and hikers.

Their is a few different places to start at the top of the trail, we choose one that would give us like 17 mile ride, not really knowing what we where in for.  So we parked our truck in Damascus (our chosen end point) and some of our friends we met here at Bear tree took us and our bikes to the top. In Damascus their are like 10 companies that rent bikes and shuttle you to the top, so if your in the area and want to give it a try, you don't need bikes or a truck, just a credit card…lol

we get dropped of and turn our bikes to the trail, the going is really easy as its a downward incline, we travel by old train depots, over train bridges and through the mountains, Amanda is a little scared at the idea of freewheeling down a mountain trail, but as we get going she gets more comfortable and relaxes a bit.  I don't really blame her the trail runs along a cliff (steep hill) on one side most of the way.

About half way down we see a trail side restaurant, it was aptly called the “creeper tail cafe”.  We were hungry so it was a no brain-er we pulled in, they had a limited menu, burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, fries, onion ect. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and Amanda got the pulled pork, I don't know if we were just really hungry or the food was that good but we scarfed it down.

We jumped back on the trail and continued to roll, we saw all kinds of neat scenery and the only problems we had was with my bike, back brakes went out and my rear bearing went to hell. (made for a bit of a tough ride but it was downhill  so I muscled through it.
all in all it was a great time, it took about 3-4 hours with all the stops and lunch.  We will be doing it again (after I fix my bike…lol)
